Between 4 and 7 months, most babies experience the emergence of their first primary incisors. While teething is a natural developmental process, it frequently brings excessive drooling, gum swelling, and broken night sleep.

True Teething Symptoms vs. Pediatric Illness: Teething causes mild gum tenderness, increased gnawing on hands, localized redness, and slight irritability. It does NOT cause high fever (above 100.4°F/38°C), severe diarrhea, systemic vomiting, or a chesty cough. Attributing true systemic illness to teething can delay necessary medical care.

The Magic of Cold Pressure: Cold constricts local blood vessels, reducing gum inflammation and numbing discomfort. Wet a clean cotton muslin cloth, tie a knot at one end, chill it in the refrigerator (not the freezer), and let your baby gnaw on the textured, cool knot.

Chilled Fruit in Silicone Feeders: For babies over 6 months, placing frozen breastmilk cubes or chilled slices of cucumber or melon inside a BPA-free silicone mesh feeder provides dual relief: safe self-feeding and instant thermal comfort.

Avoid Dangerous Teething Gels and Beads: The FDA and pediatric associations strongly advise against using topical benzocaine or lidocaine gels on infants, which carry risks of methemoglobinemia. Amber teething necklaces also present severe choking and strangulation hazards.

Gentle Gum Massage: Wash your hands thoroughly and use your clean index finger to apply firm, gentle counter-pressure along the swollen gum ridge for 60 seconds.

Summary & Takeaway: Teething discomfort comes in short 2 to 3-day waves as the tooth crowns. Keep your baby hydrated, offer safe cold pressure, and provide extra cuddles.
